Interviews for dev jobs suck balls.

I have a job opportunity that would require me to move cross-country. The process would be that I do contract work for them for about six months while I work out the details of moving my family. The position is remote, even once I move.

Does anyone have experience being a contractor and/or remote employee and would like to share your knowledge? What's it like? What don't you like? What pitfalls should I avoid?

It was the end of my first week. Friday evening and everything was going well. I'd just made a career change and loved it. My new job, boss, and coworkers were fantastic.

So I decided to play a little with a portion of the website before leaving for the weekend. I needed to learn a module that was responsible for displaying our company hours online. I was told prior to being hired that this particular part of the site was important and the only recent cause of the previous developer working long hours.

It didn't work like I thought it did, and with changing one line of code, I brought the entire thing to it's knees. Not just the part displaying hours, but the entire page, which was our home page.

I didn't panic. I called some other devs I had met. I knew they could fix it. No one answered. 4.30pm on a Friday is not the best time to reach people. Four or five unanswered calls later, I started to panic. I tried changing the line of code back, but couldn't get it right. I tired removing the hours module, but that didn't work either. 10 minutes felt like an eternity.

I finally found the history feature of our CMS. It saves versions of pages and saved me that night. I rolled back to a version of the page last modified before I started working there, and it worked like a charm.

I didn't touch that module again until I had something to replace it with.

Gotta love it when your SO answer from over a year ago gets marked as accepted.

I'm facing a technical phone interview for a full-stack engineer position. Any tips or helpful advice? What stuff should I focus on?

My non-English-native-speaking dev brothers and sisters, the proper preposition is "for" not "since" when speaking about a length of time. For example:

"I have been studying CS for 2 years."
"I worked at Google for 6 months."
"This house has been on the market for 4 weeks."

I think some ESL class has been teaching everyone improperly.

While at a *coding* conference, with lots and lots of techy devs in attendance, many using mobile devices, a vendor decided to hold a hacking contest. Hack their little problem, get a t-shirt. Hack their big problem, get a bigger prize. I go to their website and notice:

1) they force me to create an account to do either problem.

2) the fucking bag of salty dicks can't even manage to make a responsive website. I mean, I could have fixed that for the cocksuckers while at the conference. But no, the shit company comes to a place full of devs and has a shitty website. Like, make your eyes bleed like a leaky sack of vaginas, bad.

I solved their little problem as fast as I could and deleted my account out of spite.

Just saw a post on SO where the guy was asking a question about ES8, ES9 and ES10. These don't exist yet.

He even had code examples and was adamant that he was right.

I'd love to build and program robots. I've got a lot of learning to do before then.

Any remote dev out there? What's your experience being remote been like? What advise would you give someone starting a remote position?

I did, and scored 81/100. Not great, but not bad.
"Not bad," they said. "But you took too much time and didn't show us experience in JavaScript."

I completed all tasks in the allotted time and did them all in JavaScript. What else am I supposed to do for you people?

SMH at parents who fall for online scams, and won't listen to me, their computer science educated son, that it is indeed a scam and do not pay them $400 to fix a pop-up.

Fuck windows 10. I log on to start an interview code assignment that is timed. I'm on my computer getting things ready for a solid 10 minutes before starting the test. AS SOON as I start the test, windows 10 informs me:

Fuck you. There's updates and I'm installing them right now whether you like them or not, fucker. I bet you're doing something important too, so I'm not even going to let you schedule it at another time.

Fuck.

What has helped you pass interview coding tests?

It bothers me when potential employers *require* a salary expectation in your application. It's like they're focusing on the wrong parts. I don't even consider places that do that, no matter how cool the job sounds. Remember kids, in negotiations, the first one to mention a number loses.

About to give my first presentation on web development! Wish me luck, I've never felt more out of my league, even though I've been a dev for years.

This alone makes it worth it.

I can't do my job without internet. Guess which construction fuckers couldn't keep their shovels in the right holes and knocked out our power and connection to the interwebs. That's right. Those numbskulls right outside my building. The same ones who've been incompetent enough to have this project going on all. summer. long.

any remote ranters? is it common for a multi-national company with remote devs to have an email communication guide stipulating things like how long your email should be and how clean your inbox should be?

I apply to a company. Their system loses my resume, so they contact me to submit it again saying they like what they see in my application (had to write code for them and include info that's also on my resume). I send my resume. Less than 8 hours later the fuckers email me to say I'm no longer being considered.

I'm encouraged by all the female devs I see here!
