Maybe the reason there's not enough hours in the days is because we came from a world where the days were longer?2

Today I was told I can't use the word retrofit in a sentence because I have to 'use words a nice year old would understand'
There's being an effective communicator and then there's becoming a soulless, creativity killing nazi13 -
I've just been asked to give my opinion of a dev as they're on the chopping block.
I don't want people to loose their jobs over my verdict 🫠
Any advice?12 -
Humans only live for eighty years (average).
What percentage are you the way through yours?
You must be knackered 🧓9 -
I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...
They've dragging us down.
Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)
I dread working with them and I'm not alone apparently6 -
When did avocados become so popular?
10 years ago almost no one knew what they were and now they're more prevalent than hummus 🥲32 -
Today I just considered that Excel isn't just a random spreadsheet product name, it's the *word* excel. To _excel_ at something
I need to do more self reflection 🪞9 -
When you have high pattern recognition but get rudely ignored until the problem you warned about becomes a very serious issue days later 😪🙄
Fuck I'm so tired of feeling like the only one trying to stave off bad practice sometimes 🫠

ChatGPT has an "interactive speech mode" in their app so you can use just bidirectional audio to chat and it's incredible.
I had a deep and pivoting discussion on how data is stored/formatted at disk level for each database type and it responded wonderfully.
It even sounded annoyed when I was 😅
It probably will sell my voice data now though...3 -
We need to reclaim this place
Who's come up with a system that mirrors devRant but can survive by itself?
I.e. users an post what they like and still survive then devRant servers are dead?
I wanna help whoever can solve this3 -

I didn't know they 'patched' the balding bug in men, but apparently there are real medicines now that can prevent + stop it in men?

Looking at some of you guys 👀12 -
Question for the old timers: is it possible to work as a dev for the rest of your life and be happy?
.
.
.
Does it get any better or is dev burnout baked into the business model of every company?
The CEO flat out admitted it was exactly that where I'm at a few weeks ago 😞16 -
I know I was one at some point, but juniors can be so frustrating at times.
After some pairing for a while they're quick to adopt the "Dev" mindset and think as far as they need to...
... but with this latest batch... that day couldn't come sooner 🫠
Having to explain how exceptions work again is the last thing you wanna do under tight time constraints 🙃7 -
TL;DR: I hate how management doesn't listen to devs (even Dev managers).
We need to sort out our release process where I'm at. It takes a Dev about 2 solid days to complete and it's hideously involved and ripe for human error. They're completely out of action until it's done and it happens once a week!
It's stopping us releasing business critical bug fixes and features that need to go out. Instead the work just sits in develop for days doing fuck all.
Can't be agile if it takes so long to deliver value 🙃
Plus makes any fuck ups by our department look worse as it takes an age until it's fixed which reduces their collective trust in us and our opinions.
Making any improvements we want to make harder todo as they're harder to convince 🙃
Has anyone had any success getting automated releases?
How did you convince management to prioritise it?
I need to convince someone who has some influence in my company and ask how they got that influence7 -
Please don't mutter your ideas on calls or trail it off mid sentence to mouse level's of sound 🐁.
It's so awkward having to ask what you've said every few moments.
*Especially* if we work together all day all week
N.B. speakers on max volume + auto-captions are already on so I can piece together what you said.
Conversations are so difficult otherwise
That is all3 -
If you ever feel unwanted, just know that someone, somewhere, has wanked about you at some point
They're masochists ofc, but it still counts8
