What is the point of specifying whether one connected headphones or an external speaker to the computer or smartphone?

When attaching an audio device, some operating systems and smartphones ask the user about the type of audio device. For what purpose?

It depends, but usually I think it's for audio equalization/leveling. Headphones have a different sound profile than speakers, and some applications automatically adjust the output to sound better on whichever device you specify.

It's also possible It's for safety purposes. Phones used to warn users against loud music on headphones. So maybe to protect user hearing, they want to know what you connected. No idea though, just guessing
