In my current company we're being forced to use Windows for web development... I can't use a VM because of the hardware specs.

This is now my screensaver.

    Nice wallpaper.

It looks like Tux stares at you from outside and secretly judges you for using windows as a web development system.

I hope you can use WSL at least.

Edit: And yes, please share it.

    Wallpaper or peaceful riot!

@MPKaboose I'm posting it in a few minutes. Am on my way home.

Just buy a PC which can run Linux (optional if you have one) and expose it's desktop to the Internet (you can use VPN instead if allowed) (also don't forget proper authentication!) using VNC. Then you could use Linux on your workplace! (kind of a hack, and you can forget about smooth animations)

@MPKaboose OP got scared of your riot 🤣

    Herer you go <3

Might wanna upload to imgur or somewhere and share the link. devrant image compression is notorious 😛 @Cybork

Can't download from devrant! Doesn't save to gallery!
  • 2
@creativeCoder Use the Imgur link ;)
  • 1
@ScriptCoded yeah I did that! Was making sure if it's for all or only for me
  • 1
@creativeCoder @dfox For me it doesn't save images to the device either, is this a bug?
  • 2
@Traser It is! And as far as I know devrant community knows that! Donno why they ain't fixing it
  • 5
Why would anyone force you to use Windows? Unless you are using .net framework, I think this is bullshit.
  • 10
@aldoblack because Windows is easy to admin (just because there's a GUI) and they think of Linux as just a DOS clone
  • 5
@mishaor Amateurs. I have worked in two companies where they did not have laptop/pc. We had to bring our laptop. Full admin privileges.
  • 3
I feel you man. Has been the same for me with every company I've been to. But since you seem to have Windows 10, have you heard of the Linux subsystem for Windows?
I even got Arch to work on it. Now I feel at least a little bit more at home.
  • 5
@aldoblack , like @mishaor is saying, they have never developed with anything else but Windows. This company has basically all source code in C#.

I was hired to make a React JS application. I never dreamt it would be this painful.

The official reason is that Linux is harder to maintain. But this just means someone does not want/know to do their jobs, so yeah, amateur hour.

The team leads all have strong .NET backgrounds along with a Bill Gates poster in their bedrooms and seem to think I'm just being picky because in their biased opinion, windows does it all...
  • 4
@TheSilent I'm using Ubuntu bash for windows. But the pain is still real.

I say they will only learn when people start to leave because of this shit.
  • 3
And no, sadly I can't bring my own machine because of security policy >_<

I can use it at home, but I need to be connected to a Fortinet VPN, which I still haven't been able to figure how to bypass..

Very true story of most of the firms.

@Cybork you definitely hit the jackpot with this wallpaper 😃

I actually like c# 'n' .net (go on, kill me!) but I'm stealing this anywayz!! 😂😂😂😂👍

Its the age of Cloud Coders having a fuckton of work dumped on them because they have been killing it. Practically all software has been moving to Cloud.

Its also the age of "no love" for Cloud Coders. IT, EE, Desktop, Network, all got new space age tools, mostly designed by Cloud Coders. However Cloud Coders are too busy coding for everyone else, and have not gotten any love for decades.

Its also the age of break everything on the OS, so long as a dumb redneck can find the search button. Doesn't matter if Cloud Coders are slowed down 10,000%. As long as Joe Blow can search for shit to buy.

It used to be run by all Cloud Coders, and it was called the Dot Com boom. Then marketing took over because they couldn't resist the $$$$$$$. Then we had the Dot Com Crash.

    The cycle is repeating....

IT can't handle their network security, thus SSL is mandatory now. Cloud Coders can't use their self signed certificates and code locally anymore. Who cares? LOL.

    @Skyland welcome to devRant!

    @MPKaboose why not windows 10?

@CodeAlex NiceLabel breaks, the app that prints the barcode also breaks ... 😑
  • 0
@MPKaboose is that a font thing though?

@aldoblack maybe because it is easy to adminster with thinks like AD? I love Linux for private use, but is there anything as convenient to administer a high amount of workstations? Like it is done with Active Directory? Serious question!
  • 2
I'll probably get destroyed for this question, but what's wrong with web development on Win10?
  • 1
@abfarid @jibberdev919 for starters the command prompt and PowerShell are absolute shit.

Secondly, everytime I need to do git operations I have to stop my local server because the files are locked.

Third, I am used to Linux distributions, my productivity will never be as good as it would if I had access to Ubuntu (for example)

Fourth, the current windows image provided my company is full of restrictions, initially the developers didn't event have admin rights, so everytime I had to install something, I had to call someone to physically put admin credentials. Folks at this particular company have never used Ubuntu, so they wouldn't be able to render my machine useless by their incompetence.

And now I turn the question around: do you see any valid reasons why Windows should be enforced for development?
  • 1
@Cybork I'm not saying that enforcing something trivial like that makes sense or is good, I'm just saying that web development on Windows isn't THAT bad (IMO).
  • 0
@jibberdev919 that's exactly the reason they enforce windows. I already have WSL, but I still hate working like this (hardware doesn't help). Luckily we will get new machines soon and I'm hoping running a VM there will do the trick.
  • 2
Who the fuck recommends windows for web development?
Your job is dangerous, my friend.
  • 0
@reeversedev maybe web development in .net

    @Cybork
    Portugal or Brazil?

And yeah, fuck that man :D

In my company they force us to use a VM, and then head office complains of the VMWare licences being too expensive. Just like apple they create a problem and then try and sell us the solution, in this case it would be dropping docker/linux support and going full windows.

It's a bit of a pet peeve, people that call "lock screen" or "wallpaper" as screen-saver... 😐
    Sorry, I know that's pretty...
  • 0
... please tel me you’re not using git bash... I hate git bash... passionately.
  • 1
@jeremyIglehart has auto complete. Cmd doesn't.

    Currently I use WSL

    Hahahahaha epic
