Honestly it depends on what you want to do. PHP can accomplish great things, and Node.js can do awful ones.

Node.js is the "newer" of the two options, and the more trendy these days. (I'd also choose it over PHP if those were the only 2 options, but there's those who will disagree.)

Depends on the use case. For nearly everything php for me, for anything with web socket connections node for sure.
